The Alliance & Leicester were initially the first UK bank to provide its customers with an added online level of security in 2006. They created a ‘two-factor authentication’ system which was intended to verify the lawfulness of the site that a customer visits.

It worked by identifying the computer being used by the customer and then displaying phrases and pictures chosen from thousands of options to prove they are dealing with Alliance & Leicester.

However, in 2009, Alliance & Leicester produced new free software to guard online banking customers against internet fraudsters.

The Rapport software was created to battle against phishing attacks, where replica websites are made to look like the real one to trick customers into giving their personal details.

The new software was formed to work alongside firewalls and anti-virus programmes and discreetly protect your information (including customer ID and PIN) that users entered into their internet browser.

In the initial formation of the rapport software Tim Brunt, head of internet banking at the bank, stated that he urged that all customers who use internet banking should download the software.

He described further that “It will provide important additional protection when they bank online by ring-fencing their valuable information, and it is quick and easy to download.”

There’s no denying the fact that these days, most financial transactions happen online. Many institutions offer online banking services. One of them is Alliance & Leicester. They have a good track record of providing quality services to their customers. However, even the best financial institutions are vulnerable to cybercrime.
